FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions about therapy and my practice.

What can I expect for my first session?

The first session is called an intake session. During the intake I will be asking you a lot of questions so IFrequently asked questions can get to know you, the current problems you are struggling with, your goals for therapy, and some of your history and background. You will also have the opportunity to ask me questions. Sometimes the intake takes one session and sometimes it takes a couple of sessions for me to get a thorough understanding of your concerns and hopes for therapy. By the end of the intake, I will come up with a treatment plan that is tailored to you and will share this plan with you.

How often are therapy sessions?

Generally, I meet with clients once per week for 50 minutes. Weekly meetings can help you reach your goals as quickly as possible. Once you have made some progress towards your goals we can discuss if biweekly sessions are appropriate. Longer more intensive sessions (80 or 110 minutes) or more frequent sessions (multiple times per week) are also an option if you are looking to make more rapid progress towards your goals. The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. We will discuss the best frequency of sessions for you when making a treatment plan.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy can vary depending on your needs and goals. Individuals who commit to weekly sessions and complete “homework” or practice assignments outside of session are more likely to meet their goals sooner. Once we have completed the intake, I may have a better sense of how long therapy will take.

What is your therapy approach?

My Approach page gives an overview of the approach I take in therapy.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept any insurance plans. I am an “out-of-network” provider which means that your insurance company may reimburse you directly for some portion of the fees you have paid to me. Clients are provided with a monthly invoice that you can submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement, and whatever assistance I can in helping you receive benefits to which you are entitled; however, you are responsible for full payment of fees. If you intend on using your insurance for reimbursement, please consult with your insurance carrier prior to starting services to ask about “out-of-network” benefits.

Do you prescribe medication?

As a psychologist, I cannot prescribe medication. If you are already taking medication, I can coordinate your care with your prescriber, with your written permission. If you are interested in taking medication to supplement therapy, I can provide you with referrals to health care professionals that I have worked with in the past. The decision to take medication to supplement therapy is up to you.

I hope these answers have been helpful. If you have any additional questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to schedule a free 15 minute consultation.
